Seasonal Japan: What to See and Do in Each Season

Jul 10, 2025

Japan is a country that transforms beautifully with the seasons. Whether you're chasing cherry blossoms, dancing at summer festivals, admiring fiery autumn leaves, or soaking in snowy hot springs, each time of year offers something magical. Here’s how to make the most of Japan season by season.

Spring (March–May): Cherry Blossoms & Fresh Beginnings

Spring in Japan is all about sakura—cherry blossoms that blanket parks, riversides, and temples in soft pink. Join locals for hanami (flower-viewing picnics) in places like Kyoto’s Maruyama Park, Tokyo’s Ueno Park, or Hirosaki Castle in the north.

Other spring highlights include:

  • Visit traditional gardens as they come to life.

  • Try seasonal treats like sakura mochi and strawberry daifuku.

  • Enjoy mild weather, perfect for sightseeing.

Summer (June–August): Festivals & Fireworks

Summer brings energy, color, and celebration. It’s festival season, with matsuri happening all over the country. Dance in the streets at Awa Odori in Tokushima, see giant floats at Gion Matsuri in Kyoto, or catch dazzling fireworks at Tokyo’s Sumida River Fireworks Festival.

More summer fun:

  • Cool off in mountain towns like Hakone or Kamikochi. Try kakigori (shaved ice) and cold soba noodles.

  • Wear a yukata and join the locals at a night festival.

Autumn (September–November): Fall Foliage & Harvest Flavors

Autumn in Japan is breathtaking. The leaves turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold—especially in places like Nikko, Arashiyama, and the Japanese Alps. It’s a quieter, cooler time to travel, perfect for scenic walks and temple visits.

Other ways to enjoy the autumn leaves:

  • Taste seasonal foods like roasted chestnuts, sweet potatoes, and matsutake mushrooms.

  • Visit vineyards and sake breweries during harvest season.

  • Enjoy crisp air and fewer crowds.

Winter (December–February): Snow, Onsen & Illuminations

Winter turns Japan into a wonderland. Head north to Hokkaido for world-class skiing or visit the Snow Festival in Sapporo to see massive ice sculptures. Warm up in a traditional onsen (hot spring), especially in snowy towns like Kusatsu or Ginzan Onsen.

More snow-covered highlights:

  • See snow monkeys bathing in hot springs in Nagano.

  • Enjoy winter illuminations in cities like Tokyo and Kobe.

  • Try hearty dishes like nabe (hot pot) and oden.
